Multiple lighting with one lighting.
Create unique atmospheres.

The main body of the lamp can be easily detached from the base, allowing it to be used in a variety of ways, such as hanging or hanging. By changing the stand, it can also be used as a floor lamp. This allows for the creation of a multitasking space that matches today’s lifestyle, where remote work has become more common and diverse.

Research

With the rise of remote work, living spaces have evolved from mere places of relaxation to multifunctional environments. From reading a book in a relaxed state to focusing intently on work, various activities now take place in different areas of the home. Traditional table lamps consist of three elements: shade, stem, and base. By deconstructing these elements and applying a modern interpretation, we sought to create a new form of lighting that adapts to the diverse needs of contemporary living spaces, allowing users to find their own ways to utilize it based on different situations.

The design concept of “Flag” is characterized by its flexible functionality, which adapts to various uses. Throughout the rapid prototyping process, we balanced the ideal form with the practical constraints of the structure, such as the magnetic attachment between the shade and the body, the material and strength of the cord, and the weight and size of the battery.

To ensure a stress-free user experience, we conducted basic electronic work and made repeated adjustments to refine details such as the LED’s point lighting and the tactile feel of the switch.

We create high-precision functional mock-ups and place them in various locations such as offices and homes to evaluate the actual user experience and appearance. In addition to checking the standard features expected of lighting, such as LED color and brightness and battery life, we also explore unconventional uses like hanging and carrying the product. This process enhances the product’s versatility, reinforcing the concept of multi-functional usability.

Exhibition

At Milan Design Week 2023, we unveiled “5 Lights,” a collection of five lighting products, each with unique characteristics. As part of our design research, MEDUM independently engages in the planning, prototyping, and commercialization of new products in response to societal, technological, and lifestyle changes. At Milan Design Week 2023, under the theme “5 Lights,” we presented prototypes of five different lighting concepts. These designs aim to bring a touch of ingenuity and personality to everyday actions such as working, relaxing, transporting, decorating, and connecting. We are currently seeking manufacturing partners for joint development towards mass production.
