A concept design for a portable solar-powered light.
Inside the conical-shaped recycled glass is a small solar panel that charges the battery when exposed to sunlight and lights up in dark areas through an illumination sensor. The glass shade is made from old fluorescent tubes and cathode-ray tube glass that was originally used for lighting purposes. This design philosophy aims to create an ecosystem where even if the product breaks in the future, it can be melted down and recycled at the factory.
During the day, it charges the battery by soaking up sunlight, and at night, it emits a soft, candle-like glow, connecting life and nature in a warm, inviting presence at your home.

Solar panels generate power from the sun,
reminding us how moody sunlight can be.
The sharply raised industrial handle reminds us
of how a light should be used as a tool.
Nature and artifice, sensitivity and reason.
An unexpected expected design.
Cable charging is also made possible for usage on cloudy or raining days. The frames are available in two finishes, black-dyed with the bare stainless steel and satin-finished without paint. The simple stand-out handle is easy to carry and its comfortable weight that transcends to the human hand provides a sense of security. The delicately ridged glass reflects the color of the base, creating different tones with the same colored glass.
Research
This design began with an exploration of the allure of “mass.” The beauty of ice chunks glinting as they reflect natural light, and various forms of masses found in nature. We wanted to incorporate such entities into everyday products, pondering the reason for a product to exist as a mass. During this contemplation, We encountered a clear blue recycled glass made from melted and repurposed old fluorescent tubes, and the idea of creating a product that connects everyday life with nature gradually came to mind.
To give form to a vague idea, I gradually clarified its contours by working with the material and sketching.
The finely sorted cullet (recycled broken glass) modestly awaits the fire.
The heated crucible at 1300℃ never stops its fire,
melting the glass day and night.
Breathe life into the glass, melted once again.
Exhibition
At Milan Design Week 2023, we unveiled “5 Lights,” a collection of five lighting products, each with unique characteristics. As part of our design research, MEDUM independently engages in the planning, prototyping, and commercialization of new products in response to societal, technological, and lifestyle changes. At Milan Design Week 2023, under the theme “5 Lights,” we presented prototypes of five different lighting concepts. These designs aim to bring a touch of ingenuity and personality to everyday actions such as working, relaxing, transporting, decorating, and connecting. We are currently seeking manufacturing partners for joint development towards mass production. https://5lights.quantum.ne.jp/
