Paper Plane

A concept design for a floor lamp with a shade that rotates like a mobile. The inside of the shade features a low-friction bearing, and because the shade is made of lightweight paper, it gently spins like a mobile even in a light breeze. The movement of people or wind entering through a window causes the shade to rotate gracefully, creating a pleasant rhythm in the space.

The movement of a person creates wind.
Spinning along the flow.
Weightless lighting,
like a paper plane gliding through the wind.

The mirror-finished frame axis can rotate 360°, allowing you to adjust the proportions to suit the space. Additionally, the knock-down compact design reduces logistics costs. By minimizing the use of adhesives, the design also takes into account material separation, making it easier to recycle each part.

Research

The idea for this lighting design was inspired by the gentle movement of objects in everyday life.

We explored folding techniques for the shade that would be easy to assemble while keeping the seams inconspicuous when the light is on.

The design was carefully considered to ensure that the light source remains stable and visually appealing even as the shade rotates, while also taking into account the ease of maintenance for the parts.

The concept features three paper airplanes that drift freely on the wind, representing a journey. This imagery is used to convey the product’s world in a narrative form as well.

Exhibition

At Milan Design Week 2023, we unveiled “5 Lights,” a collection of five lighting products, each with unique characteristics. As part of our design research, MEDUM independently engages in the planning, prototyping, and commercialization of new products in response to societal, technological, and lifestyle changes. At Milan Design Week 2023, under the theme “5 Lights,” we presented prototypes of five different lighting concepts. These designs aim to bring a touch of ingenuity and personality to everyday actions such as working, relaxing, transporting, decorating, and connecting. We are currently seeking manufacturing partners for joint development towards mass production.
