LIGHT IS SHADOW Prototype

A series of lighting prototypes exploring the “awai”—the space between light and shadow—created by cutting and assembling single sheets of inorganic electroluminescent material. At MEDUM, we place importance on designing the relationships that connect technologies and materials with people’s everyday lives. Based on this approach, we developed a series of lighting prototypes that treat light and shadow as equal presences. The material used is inorganic electroluminescent sheet, commonly found in applications such as backlighting panels. This extremely thin, surface-emitting material was transformed using only the simple act of cutting. By introducing cuts into flat, standard A-series sheets and forming them into three-dimensional structures, we created lighting objects with a wide range of expressions. Throughout the development process, we also explored environmentally conscious methods of production. Each design was created without generating offcuts from the original sheet and could be transported in a flat-packed format. Unlike functional lighting designed to illuminate an entire space, these pieces are completed through the relationship between the soft light they emit in darkness and the shadows that emerge around them.

Ladder

A sequence of straight lines defines the form.
Under gravity, shadows rhythmically unravel the light.

Crown

Strip-like fragments are connected into a circular ring.
The repetition of light introduces a subtle, delicate fluctuation within the shadow.

Roll

Overlapping circular rolls define the form.
Shadows formed inside and outside separate the light, drawing out distinct expressions.

Rim

Layers of light form within a shallow spatial depth.
Light softly bleeds along the edges, while the shadow changes expression depending on the viewpoint.

Tangle

Free cuts cause the outlines of shadow to intertwine.
As it unfolds, intricate images of light emerge, creating a complex rhythm between two and three dimensions.

Wave

A continuous waveform expands as it moves across space.
Its undulating form brings a gentle sense of motion to both light and shadow.

Frame

Continuous U-shaped cuts, then stretch out.
A frame-like structure unfolds in continuous succession.
Shadows that appear within the void emphasize depth and reveal the spread of light.

Bean

An intersecting structure stands on its own to form the shape.
Light and shadow create a balance between flatness and volume.

Drop

Openings within the rolled form produce shadows.
Together with the light falling onto the floor, they form a paired relationship that reads as one.

Helix

A slight shift between light and shadow emerges through rolling and cutting.
A cylinder that appears on the verge of collapse, yet holds, wraps the light and gives the shadow a sculptural thickness.

Knit

Light and shadow are interwoven.
Their overlap—without fully blending—creates a rhythmic contrast.

Spark

A series of continuous cuts forms a unified structure.
Shadows flicker with movement, linking together to accentuate the motion of light.

Process

The development process began with studies in which cuts were made into single sheets of paper to explore three-dimensional forms.
We then moved on to prototyping with actual inorganic electroluminescent sheets, repeatedly testing the structural strength of the material and adjusting the colour of the emitted light.
To create a space in which light and shadow could be perceived with equal intensity, we carefully tested the brightness of each work within a simulated exhibition environment. Through this process, we identified the optimal balance between the illumination of the objects and the surrounding darkness.
