Branding for QUON, a new environmentally conscious material made by combining pulp—the raw material of paper—with resin.
QUON is a bio-composite material developed by Mitsui Chemicals, Inc.. It is produced by blending plant-derived fibers known as cellulose microfibers with resins such as polypropylene. Due to the fact that a high proportion of cellulose microfibers can be incorporated into the material, the material reduces the use of petroleum-based plastics, and it helps lower greenhouse gas emissions during the manufacturing process. In addition, Mitsui Chemicals’ proprietary additives and compounding technology enables QUON to achieve strength and processability comparable to conventional plastics, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. MEDUM supported the project from its early development phase, providing comprehensive brand design services including brand strategy, naming, logo design, copywriting, and catalog production.

The new bio-composite material QUON sets forth a brand vision that moves beyond the negative associations traditionally linked to plastics—such as mass production, disposability, and uniformity. Rather than advocating “plastic elimination,” QUON embraces the concept of “better plastics,” aiming to transform and improve the role of plastics for a more responsible future. As a material suited to a circular society, the name QUON embodies both continuity and longevity. It signifies the inheritance from petroleum-based resources to next-generation materials, while also referencing the Japanese word kuon, meaning “eternity” or “enduring through time,” expressing a hope that the material will be valued and used for generations to come.
